Topic

Humanities across Thomas Bewick school is taught through topic based curriculum, from key stage 2- key stage 4.  Each humanities topic is taught over one term, to allow the children more time to become immersed in their learning. This also allows for repetition and a depth of teaching and knowledge. In Phase One humanities is taught though the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum area of learning, “Understanding the World” and the topic is changed half termly.

The topic based curriculum also incorporates Art and Design Technology on a termly basis. We focus on the learning gained from the Design and Technology process of ‘Research, Plan, Do and Review’. A multi-sensory approach to Art is embedded into the curriculum.  All Art experiences incorporate visual, tactile and other sensory experiences which provide a therapeutic approach to learning. The Art curriculum engages the pupils, enlivens learning and develops creativity, whilst developing the skills, techniques, knowledge and confidence to explore, experiment and create a wide range of arts, crafts and design.
