Our Whole School Curriculum Model

 

At Thomas Bewick School, we understand that the learning journey for each individual child or young person will be unique and is dependent upon their different abilities, interests and aspirations.

At Thomas Bewick School we provide a needs-led, person centred curriculum which is flexible and creative. We use a range of autism specific approaches, strategies and resources in our work with children and young people and understand the need for teachers, teaching assistants, parents, carers and multi-agency professionals to work collaboratively, with each child and young person at the centre of everything we do.

We use each child or young person’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and various other forms of assessment, such as SCERTS (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Transactional Support) and our BSquared assessment tool, to create an Individual Progress Plan (IPP) for them and to inform their curriculum pathway. The three curriculum pathways at Thomas Bewick School are:

The Engage Pathway

For children and young people on the Engage curriculum pathway, we want to create inquisitive and engaged learners, through a range of motivating and exciting learning and life experiences. The Engage Pathway is based upon the principles of The Engagement Model (see Assessment Policy) and The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.

The 5 areas of engagement are:

  • Initiation
  • Persistence
  • Exploration
  • Anticipation
  • Realisation

The 5 areas of engagement are not hierarchical, so there is no expectation that pupils need to demonstrate progress in all 5 areas. The different areas provide the scaffolding to enable pupils to develop new skills and their understanding of different concepts.

The Engage curriculum pathway allows children and young people who are not yet engaged in subject specific study to access stimuli and activities on a similar theme as their peers, whilst focusing on their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development – the foundations for all learning.

The Explore and Discover Pathways

The Explore and Discover Pathways are our ‘semi-formal’ and ‘formal’ curriculum pathways. Children and young people following these curriculum pathways will be engaged in subject specific learning and will follow an adapted and modified national curriculum. A variety of topics, themes, and projects are used as ‘hooks’, in order to engage and inspire pupils in learning.
